If you feel there's still something missing in Samsung Galaxy S4 (or SIV, if you wish), you may want to keep your hard earned $600 or so tight in your fist. They might be much better spent if this rumored LG Nexus 5 Überphone will materialize:
- 5.2″ OLED Display with 1920×1080 resolution
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 @ 2.3 GHz
- 3GB LPDDR3 Ram
- 16/32/64GB of internal storage
- 16MP rear camera by OmniVision (4k video recording @30FPS, 1080p video recording @60FPS, Real Time HDR & HDR video recording, optical image stabilization, BSI 2.0)
- 2.1MP front camera (1080p video recording @30FPS)
- 3300 mAh Lithium Polymer battery
- Front positioned stereo speakers
- Qualcomm RF360 (LTE 150 Mbps & HSPA+)
- Integrated DVB-T / ATSC-antenna
- Gesture like controls (navigation, zoom, etc)
It's easy to understand that this piece of hardware code named Megalodon beats or equals flimsy SGS4 on all fronts:
-- LG 1080p OLED technology for 5.2" panel is hardly worse than SGS4's Super AMOLED. However, some Sammy aficionados may stick to their oversaturated displays;
-- Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 is this beast:
Snapdragon 800
| Model Tier | Model Number | Semiconductor technology | CPU Instruction Set | CPU | CPU Cache | GPU (Display/Video) | Memory Technology | Wireless Radio Technologies | Sampling Availability | Utilizing Devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 800 | MSM8974 | 28 nm HPm | ARMv7 | Up To 2.3 GHz Quad-coreKrait400 | L0: 4kB+4kB, L1: 16kB+16kB, L2: 2MB | Adreno 330 (QSXGA/2160p) | 32-bit dual-channel 800 MHz LPDDR3 (12.8 GB/sec) | Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (2.4/5 GHz), GSM (GPRS, EDGE), W-CDMA/UMTS (HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA+ cat.29), MBMS, LTE cat.4, CDMA2000 (1×RTT, 1×EV-DO Rel.0/Rev.A/Rev.B, 1×EV-DO MC Rev.A, 1×Adv Rev.A/Rev.B), TD-SCDMA | Q2 2013[65] |
Next time Google would want to design another "cheap" ARM Chromebook they could consider using this chip;
-- Qualcomm RF360 is considered top of the line universal, global, international, all-bands RF chip. Top of the line;
-- OmniVision 16 MP camera must be one of these:
At 1/2.3-inch, the OV16820 and OV16825 image sensors are not as big as those on the Nokia 808 PureView and on the Nokia N8, but they are brimful of functions for that matter, and capable of operating in full resolution (4608 x 3456) video at 30 FPS, 4K2K (3840 x 2160) video at 60 FPS, and 1080p HD video at 60 FPS with extra pixels for electronic image stabilization (EIS). Here's the nitty-gritty of the specs:Not so many DSLRs can record real-time HDR 1080p 60 FPS video today, so it's quite intriguing piece of hardware. Hopefully, the phone would also be capable of HEVC (H.265) encoding/decoding of coming 2K video content;
-- 3 GB of LPDDR3 (12.8 GB/sec) is a sign of genuine, undiluted Megalodon that eats whales for breakfast:
Of course, the phone itself won't look this scary. Moreover, developers of, say, Ubuntu Phone OS, and other OSes that require "whale" of fast RAM should be salivating over this extreme piece of hardware.
-- ATSC tuner on board is a US option that should be in top tier/mid-tier phones from the day one DVB-T receiving phones started to appear elsewhere;
-- Gesture ("floating") controls, and "askance" glances to control video could be good, this time thanks to SGS4 presentation.
There are chances that this LG Überphone will appear as Google Nexus 5. If it's a case, then three things may materialize with certainty:
-- a decent starting price for an unlocked device ($399);
-- a clean, de-bloated Android 5 Key Lime Pie look with better "phoblet" UI than what mess JB offers;
-- no SD card slot which became a very bad tradition for all Googlese Nexii.
Apple says Samsung Galaxy S4 won't be a "game changer". I somehow think iPhone 5S won't be either. This Megalodon may. We'll see it this October.
Last, but least is this notion about SGS4 Cyanogen Mod prospects:
"Nobody at Team Hacksung (the team behind Galaxy S2, Note, S3, Note2, G Tabs… official CM ports) plans to buy it, neither develop for it. There are two variants which will be a pain to maintain, [and] the bugs we have on the S3 will probably be there on S4, too (camera), and we all know Samsung ability to release sources while staying in line with mainline. Yes Qualcomm releases sources, but Exynos sources we had were far from [working on] actual Galaxy products. I’m pretty sure the same will happen for this one.
That’s a uniform “no” from us.
Of course, it might mean exactly nothing, and SGS4 will sell in tens of millions even with locked bootloader, incomplete source code publication just fine.
However, Team Hacksung is not really all of Cyanogen Mod, and might not be even a part of it as a team. Response of "official" CM team was quick:
Let’s start with the simplest form of this: CyanogenMod does not pre-announce support or lack of support for devices. Ever. Even for the Nexus 4, we did not announce support until a nightly build was available. Further, any announcement regarding the ‘dropping’ of device support will be communicated via this Google+ page, Twitter, Facebook, our blog, or a combination of those; it will not be something buried in a forum post.
This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.
As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.
