Oppo Find 5 And Contenders

Like I stated before, this my blog is dedicated to Tabletology. However, as the borderline between tablets and phones is actively washed away by phoblets like Samsung Galaxy Note and its followers, I might review one or two most outstanding phoblets, or phablets out there as long as they are interesting as mini-tablets.

In this vein I compiled as much material as I could about Oppo Find 5 X990. Considering such a legacy as in Oppo Finder shown in the incredible demo in that my article, I believe the Oppo Find 5 X990 will be a unique phoblet that will be able to compete with Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and not only in nailing.

I also don't feel that Oppo Find 5 is an answer to LG Optimus G, in a company of contenders like Pantech Vega 3 and Xiaomi Mi-Two, like this review states. I still think they all have started from a desire to make a better Samsung Galaxy Note, so LG Optimus G should be put in the same boat.

OK, let's see what this LG Optimus G puts on the phoblet table.

First of all, with a 4.7" screen it's a phone, not a phoblet. Even if this deficit of 0.3 inches looks insignificant, it's critical in my Book of Phoblets. It will have a "True HD" IPS+ 1280x768 screen with about 15:9 aspect ration that might look better than 16:9 in the eyes of people who like tablets like Nook HD+. Having a 13 MP, or 8 MP rear camera like some other "contenders" doesn't make much sense to me: IMHO, all the manufacturers of their respective top models must try and compete with Nokia's PureView 808, otherwise all these 12 or 13 MP shooters are junk designed to ask for a top dollar for nothing that a good 8 MP cam can do.

I might have forgotten some other unique feature of LG Optimus G, so correct me. For me, it's just employing the Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064 application processor that will need separate radio) with 2 GB of RAM that puts it in the same league that Oppo Find 5.

However, there's an additional interest to this model, if it could be considered as a prototype for the next Google Nexus:

A recent article on the next Google Nexus might shift attention back to Samsung, or move to Sony Experia line, or HTC Nexus 5.

Engadget informs that there's this 5.3" Pantech Vega 3 "true" phoblet is prepared for launch in Korea (no plans for US launch though). It packs 2600 mAh battery to feed the same Snapdragon S4 Pro apllication processor with 2 GB of RAM and the screen is 1280x720 "Natural IPS Pro LCD" (whatever it means, Oppo Find 5 with its 1920x1080 stands unbeaten).
For me, looks better than that previous "contender". In US, Pantech is known as a manufacturer of decent entry level smartphones like Pantech Burst.

Another possible prototype for the next Google Nexus, a Google Nexus 5, is somewhat detailed here. It also may have monikers like HTC Droid Incredible X, HTC One X 5. Snapdragon S4 Pro chip is present here, while other pecs may be varied at this stage, but its 5" 1920x1080 model can be on par with the Oppo Find 5.

Samsung Galaxy S4 5-incher that might be using newest 2 GHz Exynos 52xx dual core Cortex A15 chip is completely unconfirmed rumor as of today.

And to round up, Xiaomi Mi-Two, HTC One XC with its "smallish" screens didn't make it to qualify as the phoblet contenders here. A 5-inch ZTE V8300 also won't make it with its "poor" 800x480 screen and unknown dual core chip. LG Optimus Vu II won't make it in my comparison because of very clumsy and ugly 4:3 form factor. Why not make a 1:1 phone instead? One could save a lot of pain omitting all these G-sensors, accelerometers, rotation locks from such mobile device. Oh well, there will always be quadratic wristwatch phones, sure. Or someone who will love his/her LG Optimus Vu II too much would tie wrist straps to it. Be my guest, get yourself a better phwatch than this:

There's also an Oppo Finder (or should I say, iPhone 4/4s) clone called Thunderbird I5, but with a "smallish" 4 inch screen it's out of my realm. The only thing that is interesting about it to be launched in November is its quad-core 1.5Ghz MTK6588 chip that may (or may not) compete with Freescale's iMX6 Quad. Which, in turn, is hardly a competition for nVidia Tegra 3.

All in all, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will have some competition. Closest, IMHO, is still that Oppo Find 5. Competition aside, it's interesting to see many phone manufacturers worth their soldering irons tend to go with 5" models for their flagship phones of Q4 2012. 6...6.5 inch bezel-less phablets might be already in the books for them in 2013. Call them mini-tablets if you wish, but they will be with us.
