As it occurred, this 5-year old HP EliteBook 6930p was once at some Monterey Peninsula school. In California, they are obliged to pay quite a lot for the privilege of recycling computers, so guys have just dumped these somewhere for some Capitola flea market dealer to pick them up, so no littering happened.
Sure, this machine misses "A", "alt", and "Space" key tops, but otherwise it boots Xubuntu 14.04 32-bit just fine. Everything works fine after vacuuming and cleaning with alcohol with this Intel Centrino 2 vPro "inside", it's not your AMD Turion crap I resuscitated earlier.
Three soft rubber pimps instead of normal keys work fine but start to irritate me a bit. The work, but needs repair. There are two ways to do the repair: either buy these for about $5.75 a key top, or just replace the whole keyboard with a used complete keyboard for $11....$15.
An additional 4GB RAM stick for about $25, an Ubuntu Studio 14.04 Final will be a good icing on a cake. On the Web, people compare this laptop with ThinkPad T61, wow! I would trade it for T61 with high def screen any day, so, any traders?
Talking about trades, I also have this Toshiba Satellite SP-S5263 17" inch 10-pound beauty monster that I call a Tricopter:
You can see now why I call this non-Caspian Monster a tricopter: apparently, the idea was to tidbit levitate the machine and fan over your burning laps. But aerodynamic calculations obviously went wrong somehow with Tosh designers: propellers must be of much larger diameter to hold 10 pounds afloat. Or just cool down your burning knees.
I didn't test it in flight yet, as it needs a hefty AC power brick specced at 19V, 6.3A to be fed, and also an HDD that I don't have. After that, I would consider trading it for your Intel i5...i7-based laptop with much less monstrous specs, but at least capable of booting to BIOS.
Update for HP EliteBook 6930p: Xubuntu 14.04 on it was more of a proof of a concept to boot relatively fresh Linux kernel/drivers on Intel Centrino 2 vPro. So, to use the laptop with Ace Stream player which is way to old to be painlessly installed in Trusty Tahr, I rolled back and installed Ubuntu Studio 13.10 the quirks of which I know much better and can handle. Ace was installed in minutes, running smoothly, HD (720p) streams might need Ethernet connection though, as 7-year old WiFi card may not offer sufficient throughput.
WWAN module (Gobi 1000/2000/3000) is missing:
but can be had for $25...$49.
Bluetooth worked out of the box in Xubuntu 14.04, no question asked, and after some nudging in Ubuntu Studio 13.10. I use it with my RT-MWK02+ keyboard when in XBMC. Or when just trying to save those tender rubber pimples before a normal replacement keyboard arrives. My unit was without internal webcam, but works fine with an external one:
Then, while I was enjoying my HP EliteBook 6930p running Ubuntu Studio 13.10 just fine I discovered this video where a guy got his 6930p for free at the similar dump, albeit diskless:
Sure, his keyboard looks fine, but I've got 160 GB 7200 rpm stock HP HDD instead which looks a better deal to me. Or I'm just envious, lol.
To finish restoration of this HP EliteBook 6930p laptop, I might get me extra 2GB RAM stick and maybe a Gobi 3000 WWAN module later.
Для товарища Серёгаса: Сорри, метод, что я описал в hangoutском разговоре, может не прокатить уже сегодня. Новый Фьюжн ломает ХБМЦ, и потому аддоны (в том числе Сеппиуса) надо устанавливать вручную, без Визарда. Спрашивайте, что не понятно.
А няшу Крымскую подполковницу-прокурорщицу надо вам послать послихой в Японю -- политическая погода в Тихоокеанском регионе кардинально поменяется.
По Эйсу (Ace Stream/TS player), много стримов происходят с Уркаины, потому могут быть перебои с Россия 24, НТВ, Первый ХД, всякими уркаинскими каналами и НТВ+ каналами. Пользуйте обычные Паром.тв, кабан.тв, там у вас их море. Качество, конешь, не то, что с П2П, ну а чево вы хотите при информационной войне.
