This Nookie just doesn't want to die. While many more hi-specced mobile devices struggle to get Android 4.2.1, Nook Color gets it unofficial Cyanogen Mod 10.1 build like it's Google Nexus 7 or 4 or something of that fast serve status.
I struggled a little bit when istalling this new ROM and new Gapps. The struggle was, in main part, with myself, as it's a first Alpha build and it stays that way for 10 days now, no updates. The other part of this epic struggle was lesser touch sensitivity of this build compared to a January CM10 nightly I sorta enjoyed.
Nook Color has proved to be unbrickable toy, so I had nothing to lose. My first impressions go like this:
1. I did a "dirty" install, that is, no data wipe, just wiped caches, then installed ROM zip and Gapps zip on top of CM10.
2. First boot has greeted me with a screwed boot animation that lasted for maybe 5 minutes, quite long. Then, the obligatory apps "updating" took 115 apps to "update" and another 5 minutes.
3. With first boot finished without bootlooping, Nook Color was rendered almost unresponsive for more than 3 minutes. Had a tea. Touches don't register good still.
4. Rebooted. It helped a bit, but not drastically.
5. Adobe Flash player for ICS installs half-way, as with CM10. After cache cleaning, app cache remainders are at least 12k now, not 0k as previously, for whatever reason. It could be a bug, or a feature -- you choose.
6. Extremely low audio level is not mended, so I use a boost, equalizer, and ALSA Mixer all combined to get some more or less decent sound.
7. There's no special version of XBMC 12.0 Frodo for Android 4.2, but whatever I used with CM10 works fine.
8. I don't care about missing Tablet UI. I suspect it's a mess designed by Google for 4.1 and doomed to stay on 4.2. Consequently I didn't notice any new features in Google Play or any other Gapps.
9. While "stock" Android 4.2 is powered by kernel 3.4.x, this Nookie runs on eyeballer's 3.0.8+. You may argue that no BT/USB Host is the result of "immature" kernel, I'm just tired.
10. Thanks to all devs who still have Nookies to play with from time to time. It's a real Die Hard, edition 4.2.1 that I'm running now. See you all at Key Lime Pie!
UPDATE: Forgot to mention that, as promised, slide-down notifications work fine, and there are two of them now. It could be placebo effect, but touch seems like registering with less delay after several reboots.
XFCE works fine after MX Player update. Missing tablet UI doesn't bother me a bit, should it? So, this Nook Color stays a weird, oversized mike-less/cam-less/GPS-less/radio-less/audio-less phone from the Android 4.2, bite me!
Brad "Liliputing" Linder borrowed my title photo for his article which could be useful for those who for whatever reason might like to try this CM10.1 on a pre-owned Nook Color for about $60.
