LA Times puts it this way:
It's a rumor that won't die: Apple and a 7-inch iPad.
On Thursday, Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, told Computerworld that he expects Apple to release an iPad in a 7-inch screen size later this year, after a speculated March introduction of an iPad 3 with a 9.7-inch touchscreen.
What can I add to Ezra Gottheil, Heil Gott and him for that persisting rumor? Steve Jobs, a vehement opponent of everything 7 inches diagonally, will be long dead at the prospected Q3...Q4 date of 7 (or 7.85?) inch iPad Mini release. If we try to cite a proclaimed unified user experience for all iPad devices after their first iPad 3, this 7-incher will have a whooping Retina display in excess of 1470x1100 pixels in terms of resolution. That is, if Apple will stick to its Eastman-Kodakesque 4:3 aspect ratio long forgotten for 7 inch tablets out there.
It may be equally formidable pocketable iPad if they chose to go with 16:9, though I would be genuinely surprised if they ever switch from their utterly obsolete aspect.
Current rumor is very unclear in terms of exact caliber: is it 7, or earlier hinted 7.85 inches? Whatever it is, a second (or some say, third) iPad model to show up within a year indicates that a game started by Samsung with their dozen of Glaxy Tabs, continued by Kindle Fire and taken by storm with half dozen of ASUS Transformers may become pretty crowded. Even without Google (Nexus) Tablet which apparently is developed in much tighter security than this iPad Mini.
(Photo above is of an Android KIRF, a Chinese fake, so don't get too excited. Chinese are on the verge to ban "genuine" iPads at their mainland, so there are tons of these KIRFs striving to make a quick and dirty Yuan or two)
